The use of child-resistant packaging for cannabis products is not only ethical, it is required by law in many countries. Choosing the right child-resistant packaging can help cannabis companies avoid legal trouble and prevent additional scrutiny of the cannabis industry. Here are four points to consider when choosing a packaging
Regulations can be vague or variable, so start from a security standpoint. There is a lot of confusion about the definition of child-resistant packaging. Provisions in state law today could leave a plethora of gray areas that put marijuana companies at risk. It's up to packaging suppliers to ensure proper testing and standards, and it's up to cannabis companies to do their due diligence to confirm what they're buying. There are many packages on the market today that are not certified for true child resistance, or seek certification from substandard laboratories. To be on the safe side, be sure to purchase packaging designed to meet ASTM classification standard D3475 and laboratory certified using CPSC standards to meet the poisoning prevention packaging standards set forth in 16 CFR 1700 Poison Prevention Packaging.
Stock and inventory issues. Cannabis packaging for children is in high demand. Be sure to talk to your packaging supplier to learn about their ability to fulfill orders in a timely manner. Ask about delivery times including art design, production and shipping so you won't be misled on the date you got your package.
Get a sample before buying. Always ask for a sample of the product you will be buying so you can see the feel and test the material and child resistant closure system. Some closed systems are difficult for the elderly or disabled, while others do not do a good enough job of keeping children safe. Also, check the quality of printing and graphics. The availability of blank packaging does not mean that the final product will meet your standards.
Consider sustainable options. Consumers are more motivated to buy products packaged with sustainable materials. Ask your packaging manufacturer if they offer closed sustainable packaging that is child-resistant, and find out what end-of-life options are available for packaging. It is also wise to investigate the sustainability commitments and practices of the companies you do business with. Companies are often judged by who they work with.
